Through this opportunity, I will introduce you to basalt in Jeju Island. 이번 기회를 통해 제주도의 현무암을 소개해 드리겠습니다. All photos were taken by myself. 모든 사진들은 본인이 찍었습니다.

You can see various stones in Jeju Island, but the most common stone is basalt. 제주도에서는 가지각색의 돌들을 볼 수가 있지만, 가장 흔히 볼 수가 있는 돌은 현무암입니다. Since Jeju Island is an island made up of volcanic eruptions, black volcanic rocks, basalt, became the most widespread type of stone. 제주도는 화산의 폭발로 이루어진 섬이므로 검은색 화산암인 현무암이 많이 분포되어있습니다. Basalt is a black stone with many holes, adhesion, and black colour, and has formed various attractions such as Oreum, Columnar Joints, and Lava Stone in Jeju Island. 현무암은 구멍이 많고 점착성이 있으며 검은 빛깔을 띠는 돌이며 제주도의 오름이나 주상절리대, 용암동굴 등 다양한 명소들을 형성하였습니다. People in Jeju Island have used excellent fire resistance and durability of basalt for various purposes. 제주도의 사람들은 현무암의 뛰어난 내화성과 내구성을 다양한 용도로 사용해왔습니다. It was mainly used a lot in houses, fences, and stonewall roads, and was reflected in the lives and arts of Jeju residents. 대표적으로 가옥이나 담장, 돌담길 등에 많이 이용되었으며, 제주도민들의 삶과 예술에 반영되기도 했습니다. The stone house, a traditional house in Jeju Island, is made of basalt piled up like bricks, and it is solid and waterproof, making it suitable for the climate of Jeju Island, where there is a lot of wind and rain. 제주도의 전통 살림집인 돌집은 현무암을 벽돌처럼 쌓아 만든 것으로, 견고하고 방수성이 좋아 바람과 비가 많은 제주도의 기후에 적합했습니다. Also, Dolharbang, a folk art of Jeju Island, is a doll made of basalt and contains the pain and hope of Jeju residents. 또한, 제주도의 민속 예술인 돌하르방은 현무암을 이용하여 만든 인형으로, 제주도민들의 고통과 희망을 담은 작품입니다.

The black stones in Jeju harmonise with nature, thus adding to the beauty of Jeju Island. 제주도의 검은색 돌들은 자연과 조화를 이루면서 제주도의 아름다움을 더해줍니다. Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, a representative tourist destination in Jeju Island, is a volcanic island made of basalt and is registered as a World Natural Heritage Site. 제주도의 대표적인 관광지인 성산일출봉은 현무암으로 이루어진 화산섬으로, 세계자연유산에 등록되었습니다. Watching the sunrise at Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is a dream of many people. 성산일출봉에서 일출을 보는 것은 많은 사람들의 꿈입니다. Also, you can see the Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff formed by a hexagonal column of basalt and sea on the beach of Jeju Island. 또한, 제주도의 해변가에서는 현무암과 바다가 만나 육각기둥을 이룬 주상절리대를 볼 수 있습니다. Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff was created through rapid cooling of lava as it flows into the sea due to volcanic activity, showing the mysterious power of nature. 주상절리대는 화산 활동으로 인해 용암이 바다에 흘러 들어가면서 급격하게 냉각되면서 생긴 것으로, 자연의 신비로운 힘을 보여줍니다. In addition, modern buildings and basalt are beautifully harmonised, making them very popular in modern architecture. 거기에 더불어 현대 건물들과 현무암을 아름다운 조화를 이루므로 현대 건축에도 매우 인기가 많습니다.

The basalt of Jeju Island is a valuable resource that contains the history, culture, nature and art of Jeju Island. 제주도의 현무암은 제주도의 역사와 문화, 자연과 예술을 담고 있는 소중한 자원입니다. If you visit Jeju Island, you can enjoy various landscapes and works created by basalt. 제주도를 방문하면 현무암이 만들어낸 다양한 풍경과 작품을 감상할 수 있습니다.
